STEVE NALLON’S GHOST STORIES is a darkly humorous collection of tales with modern takes on the classic supernatural story traditions. There are haunted houses, enchanted mirrors, spooky graveyards, ghosts-on-the-road, revengeful witches, a blood-fest horror beach, and much more. Each yarn has its own distinctive style ranging from psychological terror and fateful horror, to comedic mischief and warm-hearted tales of redemption.

Performance readings include extracts from ‘The Portrait of a Looking-Glass’, a creepy Halloween homage to M.R. James; ‘The Return of the Handbag’, a macabre Downing Street satire featuring the ghost of Margaret Thatcher; ‘Who Fed the Cat?’, a 1940s noir-like detective story with a supernatural feline twist, plus ‘Visiting Hattie’, a laugh-out-loud farce narrated in the voice of Kenneth Williams involving the spirit of ‘Carry On’ star Hattie Jacques talking up residence in the downstairs loo of two gay bears!

Steve’s talk explores as well the ‘back story’ behind his narratives and how in the creative process these kernels of inspiration evolved into fully fledged ghost tales. On from that there’s a look at the creative techniques of leading exponents of the supernatural genre such as the novelist Stephen King and the movie-maker Guillermo del Toro.

What People Have Said About Steve Nallon’s Performance Readings of his Ghost Stories

Review quotes

“Steve Nallon’s ghost story readings were an absolute delight. The stories – by turns chilling, moving or downright hilarious – were delivered with such energy and range they had our Hell-Tor Festival audience utterly spellbound for the duration... I can’t recommend Steve’s book nor his performance of those tales enough.”

Ashley Thorpe, HELL-TOR Festival Director and movie producer at CARRION FILMS

“Steve Nallon brings the dead to life vividly in ghost stories that are as witty and entertaining as they are chilling. You are in for a real treat. Don’t miss him!”

Stephen Volk, screenwriter of the BBC’S GHOSTWATCH and the Ken Russell movie GOTHIC

“A huge ginormous thank you for yesterday... Didn’t the audience love you?? You were so fabulous and I cannot thank you enough for being a part of our St Albans event. It looked like lots of people wanted to buy your book, so I hope you did well. Thank you again.”

Sarah Cronin-Stanley at TALKING PICTURES

“Steve Nallon reading his exhilarating ghost stories gets a hearty thumbs-up from me. There’s plenty of wit and wisdom on show, plus a good helping of spectral chills.”

Jonathan Rigby, author of ENGLISH GOTHIC, STUDIES IN TERROR and CHRISTOPHER LEE: THE AUTHORISED SCREEN HISTORY

I had such a wonderfully chilling time listening to STEVE NALLON’S GHOST STORIES – he is such an entertaining and highly skilled performer. Go see!

Claire Louise Amias, actress and writer known for her plays THE MASKS OF APHRA BEHN and ORANGES & INK, and her sell-out performances as Edith Nesbit in HAUNTED SHADOWS

“A story about Hattie Jacques read in the voice of Kenneth Williams? A story about Margaret Thatcher being haunted in the corridors of 10 Downing Street, read in her voice? Yes please! In addition to crafting some superb stories, Steve is also hugely knowledgeable about the genre, and this shines through both his performance and the manner in which he discusses the stories. Highly entertaining and not to be missed!”
