'IT'S WHAT SHE WOULD HAVE WANTED' – A contemporary tale of a mother-in-law’s battle to control the domestic world of her newly married son and his wife.

It’s What She Would Have Wanted cover

Years ago a friend told me about his very possessive and controlling mother, and as he did so the image came into my head of her bringing an ornament to his house, putting it centre position on the mantelpiece and saying, "This will look very nice here." I never did anything with the thought, but it came back to me as I was preparing this collection and I developed it into a tale about the inability of a mother to let go. The original ending of ‘It’s What She Would Have Wanted’ was more sinister, but friends said it left an unpleasant taste, so I rewrote it to be less about power and control and more about acceptance and understanding.

"Steve Nallon’s ‘It’s What She Would Have Wanted’ is funny, relatable and spookily familiar – finding the funny in death is no mean feat and Nallon has done it – read this and take heed, it could well be you one day!"
